Taif to Al Baha by road is a private transfer south through the Sarawat highlands, booked as one journey from your Taif hotel to a named address in the Al Baha region. We do not publish a single distance for it, because the figure depends on exactly where you start and finish: search your own hotels in the transfer finder and check the distance shown in the route summary. For most travellers it works best as a one-way move with at least one night in Al Baha (also written Al-Bahah or Al-Baha), followed by a separate journey onward or back, rather than a there-and-back drive in a single day.

This guide is for visitors already staying in Taif, or planning to, who want to add Al Baha to their trip, and for those wondering whether to reach Al Baha from Jeddah in one go or by way of Taif. It covers what the region is and where it sits, how to read the route before you book, the choice between one-way, return and overnight plans, stops on the way, weather and altitude, vehicle choice and the Jeddah Cabs booking rules. A decision table, a worked example and a checklist follow.

Four-step diagram for planning Taif to Al Baha by road: book your Al Baha hotel first, check the distance shown in the planner, choose a one-way or overnight plan, book 48 hours ahead and wait for Confirmed.

Where Al Baha is, and why people head south from Taif

Al Baha is Taif’s neighbour to the south. Saudipedia’s entry on Taif Governorate lists “al-Bahah Emirate” among Taif’s southern borders, and its page on Al-Bahah Province describes the province as surrounded by Makkah Province to the north and west and by Aseer to the east and south. Both sit on the Sarawat range, the mountains that run south from the Taif area towards the Yemeni border.

What draws people is the landscape. According to Saudipedia’s page on Al-Bahah City, the city stands at about 1,700 metres, has a moderate climate for much of the year and is a popular summer destination. The same page says the province has around forty forests, with Raghadan Forest the best known. Visit Saudi, the official tourism site, describes Raghadan Forest Park in terms of cool mountain air, ancient juniper trees and views over the Tihamah plains below.

The region is also known for stone-built heritage villages. Saudipedia’s article on traditional architecture in Al-Bahah names Dhi Ayn and al-Atawilah among them, and notes that the Heritage Commission’s register lists 194 archaeological and heritage sites across the province. The province’s highest point, Mount Uthreb, reaches about 2,447 metres southeast of Baljurashi.

If you are reading this from Jeddah or planning the whole trip from home, our guide to choosing a Taif base before mountain outings explains how the Taif end of the trip fits together.

Taif to Al Baha by road: what the route involves

The drive runs south along the highlands rather than down to the coast. Saudipedia’s page on Al-Mandaq Governorate, north-west of Al Baha city, describes it as stretching along the Taif to Al Baha tourist route, at an elevation of about 2,240 metres. Expect a mountain road with changes of height, and weather that can change as you gain altitude.

We do not quote journey times. They depend on the route the driver takes, roadworks, weather and the time of day, and on how many stops you add. What we can say is that this is an intercity transfer, not a short hop between neighbouring towns, and it deserves the same planning as the long road up from Jeddah. For comparison, our live route checks put Jeddah Airport to the InterContinental in Taif at about 197 km. Look at the distance for your own Taif to Al Baha search in the planner and judge the day accordingly.

Reading the route before you book

Al Baha is not one of the preset popular locations in the transfer finder, so you will type the destination. When you do:

  • type the full name of your hotel or address, not just “Al Baha”, so the journey ends where you will sleep;
  • check that the route summary shows the place in the Al Baha region you meant, not a similarly named place elsewhere;
  • note the distance shown for that exact pair of addresses;
  • run the search in the direction you will travel; road distances differ by direction because of junctions and one-way systems.

If the route summary looks wrong, stop and correct the address before paying. A journey booked to the wrong place is not something the driver can fix on the day.

Al Baha road trip from Taif: one-way, return or overnight

An Al Baha road trip from Taif can take several shapes. The booking system treats every leg as its own journey, with one pickup place, one destination and its own pickup time, and the pickup and destination must differ. So “there and back” is always two bookings.

Plan Journeys you book Suits Watch out for
One-way move to Al Baha Taif hotel to Al Baha hotel Continuing your trip from Al Baha Checkout and check-in times at each hotel
Same-day there and back Taif hotel to a place in Al Baha; that place back to Taif Only very keen, fit travellers with a clear single destination A long day on mountain roads, little time on arrival
One or two nights, then back to Taif Taif hotel to Al Baha hotel; Al Baha hotel back to Taif Seeing forests and villages at an easy pace Two long journeys on separate days
Nights in Al Baha, then back to Jeddah Taif hotel to Al Baha hotel; Al Baha hotel to your Jeddah hotel or the airport Ending the trip without returning to Taif Check the Al Baha to Jeddah distance in the planner
Outings from an Al Baha base Hotel to a named place; that place back to the hotel A forest park or village visit Agree the return time in advance

For most people the overnight plan is the sensible default. A same-day return puts two long mountain journeys into one date, with most of the daylight spent in the car. Staying at least one night gives you the evening air, a morning at a forest park and a calmer journey back.

If you are only in Taif for a short time, our guide to changing hotels in Taif as its own journey shows the same logic applied to a move within Taif: book the move from one exact hotel to the next, with a time that fits both.

Choosing where you stay in Al Baha

The province covers a wide area, and Saudipedia lists nine governorates within it, including Baljurashi, al-Mandaq, al-Makhwah, al-Aqiq and Qilwah. Where you stay shapes both the Taif to Al Baha journey and every outing you make afterwards.

Three practical rules help:

  1. Name a real hotel. The destination of the Taif journey should be the hotel where you will check in, spelled as on your reservation.
  2. Match the base to what you want to see. If a forest park is the main reason for going, look for a base that makes that outing short. If a heritage village is the draw, check access and visiting arrangements with the official tourism information before planning a journey there.
  3. Keep the return in mind. Before you commit to a hotel, search both the journey in from Taif and the journey out to wherever you go next, and compare the distances the planner shows.

We cannot confirm opening arrangements for individual parks or villages. For those, check Visit Saudi or the local authority before you set a pickup time.

Stops on the way south

A booking can include up to eight stops, added in the order you will reach them. A stop suits a short pause: a viewpoint, a prayer break, a meal you have planned, a quick walk. It is not a sightseeing session with the car waiting while you explore for an hour.

If you want real time somewhere between Taif and Al Baha, the cleaner approach is to make that place the destination of one journey and book a second journey onward from it. Our article on adding a viewpoint stop on the road to Taif explains the difference in more detail, and the same reasoning applies on the road south.

Name each stop precisely in the booking. “Somewhere with a view” is not a place a driver can plan for; a named park or village is.

Weather, altitude and the season

Mountain weather is part of planning Taif to Al Baha by road. The official and reference sources we read describe:

  • Taif: Saudipedia’s Taif Governorate entry gives winter temperatures from around 3 °C to around 18 °C.
  • Al Baha city: winter brings frequent cloud and fog, thunderstorms, lower temperatures and heavy rainfall; spring and summer are temperate.
  • Al-Mandaq, on the tourist route: summer temperatures that do not exceed 30 °C, winter temperatures that sometimes reach zero, and fog on most winter days.

What this means in practice:

  • Pack layers, even in summer. Evenings in the highlands can feel cool after a day in Jeddah.
  • Prefer daytime pickups for the long leg, so the drive through the higher ground happens in daylight.
  • Allow flexibility in winter. Fog and heavy rain can slow a mountain journey. Build a margin into any onward plan, especially a flight.
  • Think about motion sickness. Winding roads affect some passengers more than others. Seat them where they are most comfortable and plan a stop or two.

Al Baha from Jeddah: in one go or by way of Taif

Many people search for Al Baha from Jeddah because they will land at King Abdulaziz International Airport. There are three sensible shapes.

Via Taif, with a night there. Book Jeddah Airport to your Taif hotel first (about 197 km in our live checks), spend at least one night, then book Taif to Al Baha as a separate journey. This breaks a long travel day into two, and gives you Taif as well. Our guide to making the first night in Taif the destination covers that first leg.

Direct from Jeddah. You can search a single journey from Jeddah Airport or your Jeddah hotel straight to your Al Baha hotel. Check the distance shown in the planner before deciding; it will be a long day after a flight.

Flying to the region. Saudipedia notes that the province has King Saud Bin Abdulaziz Airport in al-Aqiq Governorate. If you are considering a domestic flight instead, check schedules with the airlines, then book any ground journey from that airport as its own transfer.

If anyone in your party is not Muslim

Makkah lies between Jeddah and Taif, and entry to Makkah is restricted to Muslims; the Saudi Press Agency, reporting a Makkah Police statement, referred to “the laws that prohibit entry to Makkah for non-Muslims”. If anyone travelling is not Muslim, say so in the booking notes for any journey between Jeddah and Taif or Al Baha, so the driver can plan a lawful route.

Choosing the vehicle for a long mountain journey

Going from Taif to Al Baha by road means a long spell on mountain roads, so comfort and luggage space matter more than on a short city run. The transfer finder shows only the vehicle classes that pass the capacity check for your passengers and large bags, with models given as examples “or similar”.

Party Classes to consider Why
Couple with two large cases Economy or Business and Executive Enough space; Business adds room for a third case
Four adults, four large cases Premium SUV or larger Economy and Business cannot take four large cases
Family of six or seven with luggage Hyundai H1 or GMC Yukon XL Seven seats and room for six large cases
Small group Toyota Hiace or Coaster Seats for 11 or 19 and far more luggage space

Add child seats (infant, child or booster) and any wheelchair requirement in the search, so they are confirmed for the vehicle. Each journey is booked separately, so add them to every leg, not just the first. Our guide to Jeddah taxi vehicle classes explains what each class means.

Worked example: the Siddiqui family’s four days in the highlands

Bilal and Amina Siddiqui are visiting Saudi Arabia in late spring with Amina’s parents. They land at Jeddah on a Monday and fly home from Jeddah the following Sunday. They want two nights in Taif, two in Al Baha and a final night in Jeddah. They are four adults with four large cases.

Their journeys:

  1. Monday: Jeddah Airport to their Taif hotel. Premium SUV, flight number added at checkout.
  2. Wednesday, 10:00: Taif hotel to their Al Baha hotel, typed in full. They check the route summary, note the distance and add one stop at a named viewpoint for a short break.
  3. Thursday, 09:30: Al Baha hotel to Raghadan Forest Park.
  4. Thursday, 13:00: Raghadan Forest Park back to the hotel. They agreed this time in advance and put it in the booking.
  5. Friday, 09:00: Al Baha hotel to their Jeddah hotel. They check the distance in the planner first and decide it is manageable because Saturday is a rest day.
  6. Sunday: Jeddah hotel to the airport, worked back from the airline’s deadlines.

They book all six journeys more than two weeks ahead, pay the deposits online and wait for each to show Confirmed. Amina’s father walks slowly, so for the Wednesday pickup they add 15 minutes of extra waiting to the Premium SUV’s 45 free minutes, giving an hour from the booked time to get everyone and every case into the car.

Booking rules for the Taif to Al Baha journey

Notice. Online bookings need at least 48 hours’ notice before the pickup. Book the Al Baha leg when you book Taif, not on arrival.

Status. Payment secures a provisional request. The booking team updates it within 1 to 12 hours, and the journey is booked only when it reads Confirmed. When a driver is assigned, you receive an email with the vehicle registration and meeting instructions.

Payment. Jeddah Cabs may take only a deposit online, with the balance paid in cash to the driver. The checkout shows both figures, and your account shows the cash due in your booking currency.

Minimum value. Each journey has a minimum booking value equivalent to £40. Short outings from an Al Baha hotel may show a “Minimum booking amount” line.

Waiting at the hotel. Free waiting counts from the booked pickup time, not from when the car arrives. Economy includes 15 minutes, then SAR 1.50 a minute. Business and Executive, the Staria and the H1 include 30 minutes, then SAR 2.00 a minute. The Premium SUV includes 45 minutes, then SAR 2.50 a minute. Extra waiting can be added at checkout in 15-minute steps up to two hours, and the driver cannot wait beyond what was booked.

Changing the time. You can request a new pickup time from your account before the pickup. An approved change carries a £5 fee, converted into the booking currency and added to the cash for the driver; a rejected request costs nothing. Only the time changes online. A different hotel, more passengers or another vehicle needs the booking team.

Cancelling. Bookings are subject to our cancellation terms (free cancellation with a full refund up to 48 hours before pickup; inside 48 hours the deposit element of the price is kept) if you cancel. If Jeddah Cabs or the transport partner cancels, or cannot supply the journey and no suitable alternative is accepted, you get a full refund for the affected journey. See the cancellation and refund policy.
